| The Purple
People Bridge crosses the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Ohio, and
Newport, Kentucky. Built as a railroad bridge in 1872, it was later
expanded to include streetcars, automobiles, and pedestrians. After
being neglected and abandoned, it was reopened for pedestrian and
bicycle use in 2003. It is one of many old railroad and highway bridges
that have found new life as pedestrian and bicycle bridges.
