Photo - Problems for pedestrians in Thorndale, Pennsylvania
.

Concrete barriers protect temporary classroom buildings at Pyle Middle School from wayward cars on Wilson Lane in Bethesda, Maryland. The placement of the barriers squeezes students onto a narrow sidewalk next to the busy street. The barriers could have been placed at the curb, thereby protecting both the students and the buildings. Or they could have been placed back from the edge of the sidewalk, giving groups of students spilling off the sidewalk someplace to go other than into the street.
