Photo - old railroad bridge in Gainesville, Florida.

A pedestrian bridge is the subject of the Ninth Witters Student Design Competition at the University of Florida.

Years ago, an old railroad bridge was converted to pedestrian use as part of a rail-trail project in Gainesville, Florida. Aesthetics were not on the priority list during the initial conversion. The resulting eyesore became the subject of the ninth Witters Student Design Competition at the University of Florida. Cross-disciplinary groups of students had one day to create their alternative designs for the bridge to present to an outside panel of judges.
