Route 29 in Fairfax County, Virginia, has no sidewalk or bike lane in many places. Here, pedestrians have worn a path trying to go from a townhouse development to the nearby shopping center. The Virginia Bicycle Federation has lobbied for "routine accommodation" for bicyclists and pedestrians when roads like this are built. Virginia Secretary of Transportation Whitt Clement recently announced policy changes that would include "routine accommodation" in future road projects.
