- 6,000 pedestrians are killed every year.
- 90,000 pedestrians are injured every year.
- A pedestrian or bicyclist is killed every 3 1/2 minutes.
- Pedestrian injuries and fatalities result in $20 billion in societal costs.

Hot! Bicycle Transportation and Pedestrian Walkways provisions of the US Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21).
VicRoads is the Victorian State Government (Australia) agency responsible for managing the road network. Their Pedestrian Safety Information Bulletin reports that in 2000 pedestrians accounted for 15 % of deaths and 11 % of serious injuries on Victoria roads and were four times more likely to be killed in a crash than other road users involved in a crash.
Washington State Department of Transportation Did you know that of all the trips less than one half mile, 39 percent are made by walking? And, that the combination of good roadway engineering and land use design can create more walkable communities and reduce short vehicle trips?
How about this for a great pedestrian idea? In 1996, the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Attorney General's office announced that 65 cities and counties would receive $3 million from petroleum damage funds that would be used for school pedestrian safety projects. The projects included signing, hazard elimination, traffic control devices, crosswalks, and sidewalks.

Draft Wisconsin Pedestrian Policy Plan. The goal of the State Pedestrian Plan is to provide a basic description of existing and emerging pedestrian needs over the next 20 years, and a set of recommendations to meet those needs.
