• Austin, Texas Sidewalk Task Force has released a draft interim report documenting existing practices, guidelines, and specifications for sidewalk construction.

• Australia's Federal Office of Road Safety supports the NHMRC Road Accident Research Unit at The University of Adelaide in producing the report "Traveling Speed and the Risk of Crash Involvement".  Many of the studies regarding lower speeds and crash incidents are questioned in this report.

• Iowa Dept. of Public Safety Pedestrian/Bicycle Fact Sheet. During 2000, 22 pedestrians were killed in Iowa traffic crashes. During the 1990s, Iowa averaged over 700 traffic related pedestrian injuries and 28 pedestrian traffic fatalities each year.

• City of Naperville, IL's sidewalk replacement program The Department of Public Works repairs and replaces sidewalks on a cost-sharing basis. For residential sidewalks, the City pays 60 percent and the resident pays 40 percent.

• City of Tallahassee, Florida Bike & Pedestrian Program was created in the spring of 1991. The overall goal is to increase the use of bicycles and walking for transportation as well as recreational purposes.

  • Very Hot! Pedestrian Safety Roadshow assists communities in developing their own approach to identifying and solving the problems that affect pedestrian safety.

  • Updated. Federal Transportation Administration's Pedestrian & Bicycle Research Safety Page provides information on issues and research related to improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety. Statistics show that:

    • 6,000 pedestrians are killed every year.
    • 90,000 pedestrians are injured every year.
    • A pedestrian or bicyclist is killed every 3 1/2 minutes.

• VicRoads is the Victorian State Government (Australia) agency responsible for managing the road network. Their Pedestrian Safety Information Bulletin reports that in 2000 pedestrians accounted for 15 % of deaths and 11 % of serious injuries on Victoria roads and were four times more likely to be killed in a crash than other road users involved in a crash.

• Washington State Department of Transportation Did you know that of all the trips less than one half mile, 39 percent are made by walking? And, that the combination of good roadway engineering and land use design can create more walkable communities and reduce short vehicle trips?

  • How about this for a great pedestrian idea? In 1996, the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Attorney General's office announced that 65 cities and counties would receive $3 million from petroleum damage funds that would be used for school pedestrian safety projects. The projects included signing, hazard elimination, traffic control devices, crosswalks, and sidewalks.

• WisDOT Bicycle and pedestrian transportation information. "According to a recent WisDOT statewide survey, nearly 12% of all trips were being completed by bicycling and walking"

• Draft Wisconsin Pedestrian Policy Plan. The goal of the State Pedestrian Plan is to provide a basic description of existing and emerging pedestrian needs over the next 20 years, and a set of recommendations to meet those needs.
